National Dog Day:

Why Our Dogs Deserve Portraits That Last a Lifetime
Every year on August 26, National Dog Day permits us to do what we’re already tempted to do daily—love our dogs a little louder. As a lifelong Henderson photographer, I’ve had the privilege of photographing hundreds of families and their dogs—from bouncy puppies to silver-muzzled best friends who’ve stood by for a decade or more. Some of those dogs passed just days after their session, and those portraits became more than photographs; they became touchstones—the last, best memory of a faithful friend nestled into a family’s story.
This is why I believe dog portraits are not a luxury. They are legacy pieces, as essential to a home’s walls as the family portrait. Dogs are family. They teach our kids responsibility, greet us at the door when no one else is looking, and somehow sense when we need quiet company more than conversation. On National Dog Day, I want to share why creating fine art of your beloved pup matters, how I approach these sessions, and what to expect—so you can confidently plan a portrait that honors the love you live with every day.
The Heart of a Dog Portrait
When I photograph people with their dogs, I’m not chasing trends. I’m looking for connection: the way your lab leans on your leg, the patient's “high-five,” the alert head tilt when you say walk, the quiet weight of a senior dog sleeping on your lap. These are micro-moments that tell a deeper story:
- Trust: The soft eye contact and relaxed body language.
- Ritual: The daily walk, the favorite chair, the tattered rope toy.
- Belonging: The way your dog places themselves between you and the world—just to be close.
I approach each session like a family legacy commission—because that’s what it is. Whether we’re in my Water Street studio, out around Henderson and the Las Vegas Valley, or at your home, my goal is to create artwork worthy of the love you feel.
A Personal Note: Our Franki
My wife and I are absolutely in love with our little toy Aussie, Frankie. Not long ago, while we were out of town, he somehow slipped out of the backyard. For a few gut-wrenching hours, our hearts were breaking—we felt helpless from miles away, imagining every worst-case scenario. Thankfully, dear friends in the neighborhood spotted him, scooped him up, and brought him safely home. That wave of relief is something I’ll never forget. Moments like that remind me why I make these portraits: love is fragile, time is slippery, and the photographs we create together become anchors—proof of the joy and companionship that fill our days.
When a Portrait Becomes a Keepsake
There’s a sentence I’ve heard often: “I wish we’d done this sooner.” Over the years, I’ve photographed many dogs with their families who unexpectedly crossed the rainbow bridge shortly after our session. In those moments—when the leash hangs by the door and the house feels too quiet—the portrait becomes more than décor. It’s comfort. It’s gratitude. It’s proof of a life well loved.
If your dog is aging or has health issues, please don’t wait. We can move quickly, schedule outside of normal hours if needed, and build a calm, low-stress session around your dog’s comfort level. We’ll plan for short breaks, quiet music, and familiar toys. My priority is to give you peace of mind and images you’ll cherish.
How a Dog Portrait Session Works
1) Discovery call
We’ll talk about your dog’s personality, favorite treats, energy level, sensitivities (noise, lights, new people), and your vision for the final artwork. We’ll also discuss locations—studio for timeless, clean portraits, or outdoors in Henderson, Boulder City, or the Las Vegas Valley for a natural, lifestyle feel.
2) Style & story plan
We’ll select a color palette (that complements your home), clothing guidance for owners, and a short shot-list: dog alone, dog with each family member, full family, detail moments (paws, collars, noses, whiskers), and your signature interaction (fetch, snuggle, couch cuddle, car ride, etc.).
3) The session
I’m patient, dog-led, and prepared. I have quite continuous lighting, textured backdrops, non-slip surfaces, and space to move. For outdoors, we plan around light (golden hour when possible), temperature, and safety. We use positive reinforcement, plenty of treats, and we stop if your dog needs a break.
4) The selection
Within a few days, we’ll review a curated set of images and design your artwork: framed wall portraits, canvas gallery wraps, or album collections that tell a complete story. I’ll show you scale mockups to choose the right size for your wall, and we’ll finalize finishes to fit your home’s style.
5) Delivery
Your artwork arrives ready to hang or display—archival, color-calibrated, and crafted to last. Your dog deserves nothing less.
Studio vs. On-Location: Which Is Right for You?
Studio (Water Street, Henderson)
- Controlled lighting for crisp, classic portraits
- Minimal distractions for anxious or reactive dogs
- Elegant, timeless look with soft, textured backdrops
- Perfect for signature wall art and fine-art black-and-white
On-Location (Henderson, Las Vegas Valley, select Southern Utah dates)
- Story-rich environments: desert trails, neighborhood parks, front porch, backyard
- Natural interactions—walking, playing, relaxing together
- Golden hour glow and lifestyle storytelling
- Great for album narratives and collage walls
What to Bring (and What I’ll Have)
- Favorite treats (bring your own for sensitive stomachs; I have backups)
- Beloved toy or blanket (the “comfort item” photographs beautifully)
- Grooming touch-ups (brush, wipes, lint roller)
- Leash & collar/harness (neutral colors photograph cleanest)
- Water & bowl (I keep extras on hand)
- Patience & playfulness (your dog takes cues from you; if you’re relaxed, they will be too)
I supply non-slip mats, quiet fans, pee pads (accidents happen—no stress), and sanitation supplies. You focus on your dog. I’ll take care of everything else.
Why Print Matters (Especially for Pet Portraits)
Digital files are great for sharing, but printed artwork is how we live with our memories. When a framed portrait hangs in your hallway, your dog is part of your everyday morning coffee glances, quick smiles on busy days, and soft sighs in the evening. Print anchors the relationship in your home’s heart.
My studio offers:
- Signature Wall Portraits (framed or canvas, sized to your space)
- Story Albums (your dog’s life in chapters—puppy, training, adventures, quiet moments)
- Boxed Folios (mat-mounted prints for rotating displays or gifts)
Everything is created with archival materials, so your artwork lasts for decades—just like the best stories.
Gentle Guidance for Senior and Special-Needs Dogs
Senior dogs and dogs with anxiety, mobility issues, or medical needs are always welcome. We can photograph lying down, on raised beds, or in your home, where they feel safest. The right image doesn’t require complex posing—a soft eye, a relaxed paw, a familiar blanket can be more powerful than any trick.
If your dog is nearing the end, we can quietly schedule an End-of-Journey session. These are tender, unhurried, and built around what your dog can do comfortably. It’s my honor to create these portraits with the care and dignity your companion deserves.
A Note About Grief and Gratitude
When families call me after saying goodbye to a dog we photographed, I hear the same words: “I didn’t realize how much I’d hold onto that picture.” Grief is love with nowhere to go. A portrait gives it somewhere to rest—on the wall, in your hands, in a book you can open whenever you need to. If you’re reading this with a lump in your throat, I see you. Your dog has given you the best years of their life. You’re allowed to honor that with something beautiful.
Planning Your Dog Day Portrait
- Best timing: soon after grooming, when paws and coat look their best (unless you love the scruffy look—then come as you are!)
- Clothing for people: neutral, solid colors that won’t compete with your dog’s coat; coordinate, don’t match
- Session length: typically 45–90 minutes; shorter for seniors or anxious dogs
- Weather: for outdoor sessions, we plan for comfort and safety first—shade, water, and cool times of day
If you’re thinking “I’d love this for the holidays”, now’s the perfect time. Wall art and albums take time to craft. Booking around National Dog Day ensures holiday-ready gifts and art for your home.
Local, Community-Rooted, and Here for You
I’ve called Henderson home since childhood, and my studio on Water Street has welcomed families and their dogs for decades. I’m proud to support local organizations and to use my craft to celebrate the bonds that hold our community together—veterans and their service animals, seniors and their gentle companions, first-time dog parents bursting with joy. If your heart has a dog-shaped space, you’ll feel at home here.
Frequently Asked Questions (Pet Portraits in Henderson & Las Vegas)
How early should I book?
For holiday deadlines, aim for 6–8 weeks before you need finished artwork. If your dog is a senior or has a health concern, let me know—we’ll make accommodations quickly.
Do you photograph just the dog, or people too?
Both. I always recommend at least a few with your dog—years from now, those will mean the most.
What if my dog can’t be off-leash?
Leashes are completely fine. I can pose and edit so the leash is minimized or removed when appropriate.
Can we do the session at home?
Absolutely. Home sessions are story-rich and extra comfortable for your dog.
Do you offer albums and wall art?
Yes. I specialize in fine art wall portraits and story albums designed to fit your space and style.
