Enjoy This Summer in the Vegas Valley
When most people think of Las Vegas, they picture bright lights, casinos, and nightlife. But for those of us who call the Vegas Valley home, we know there’s so much more to love about our community, especially for families looking to enjoy quality time together.
This summer, whether you live in Henderson, Las Vegas, or anywhere in the Valley, there are endless ways to create lasting memories with your family—no slot machines or poker chips required.
As a family photographer serving Henderson and the Vegas Valley for over 30 years, I’ve seen firsthand how important it is to spend intentional time together—and how those moments deserve to be captured.
Here are my favorite 10 family-friendly, non-gaming activities to enjoy this summer—plus a little reminder to bring your camera (or let me help you with that) to preserve those special memories.
1. Visit Springs Preserve – Explore Nature & History
Springs Preserve in Las Vegas is one of the Valley's hidden gems. It offers 80 acres of botanical gardens, hiking trails, museums, and interactive exhibits perfect for families of all ages.
Wander through the desert gardens, learn about Nevada’s rich history, or visit the Origen Museum. It’s educational, beautiful, and perfect for summer mornings before the heat peaks.
2. Cool Off at Cowabunga Bay Water Park – Henderson
Nothing beats the heat like a day at Cowabunga Bay in Henderson. With waterslides, a lazy river, splash zones for little ones, and family raft rides, it’s a summer must.
For parents, it’s the perfect mix of fun and relaxation—and for kids? Endless adventure.
Pro Tip: Book your Cowabunga Bay visit early in the day to avoid the peak afternoon heat.
3. Take a Day Trip to Mount Charleston
If you’re craving cooler temperatures, head up to Mount Charleston, just under an hour from Las Vegas. Enjoy scenic drives, picnic spots, and family-friendly hiking trails with breathtaking mountain views.
It’s a great place to escape the heat, connect with nature, and even grab some stunning family portraits in a natural setting.
4. Explore Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay
For families with little explorers, the Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay offers an up-close look at sharks, sea turtles, stingrays, and exotic fish—all in a cool, indoor environment.
Kids love walking through the tunnel surrounded by swimming sharks, and parents love how educational (and air-conditioned) the experience is.
5. Red Rock Canyon Scenic Drive & Visitor Center
Red Rock Canyon is more than a scenic drive—it’s a world of natural beauty, right in our backyard. Families can take the 13-mile scenic loop, stop for easy walks or photo ops, and visit the interactive Visitor Center.
Summer Tip: Go early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the extreme heat and catch the gorgeous desert light, perfect for a family photo session.
6. Picnic and Play at Cornerstone Park – Henderson
For a low-key day close to home, Cornerstone Park in Henderson is a family favorite. With walking trails, open fields, a lake, and playgrounds, it’s a great spot for a summer picnic or playdate.
It’s also one of my favorite locations for casual family portraits or candid shots of your little ones enjoying the outdoors.
7. Discover the Discovery Children’s Museum
If the summer heat gets overwhelming, head indoors to the Discovery Children’s Museum. This multi-level museum in Downtown Las Vegas offers interactive exhibits that engage kids in science, art, and imagination.
From building structures to exploring water play areas, there’s something for toddlers to tweens.
8. Family Portrait Session at Mikel’s Photography & Design
Okay, I might be biased—but if you truly want to create lasting family memories this summer, a professional family portrait session is one of the best investments you can make.
Whether you want an indoor studio session, outdoor portraits at one of the Valley’s scenic spots, or a special Legacy Portrait Session for grandparents, I’d be honored to help you capture these moments before summer flies by.
I currently offer summer family portrait specials, including limited sessions in my cool studio and my exclusive Secret Garden outdoor area.
9. Explore Boulder City and Lake Mead
For a charming day trip, head to Boulder City, stroll through the historic downtown, grab lunch, and explore the nearby Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
From boat rentals to picnic areas and scenic overlooks, Lake Mead offers outdoor fun for families without the Vegas hustle and bustle.
Bonus: Boulder City makes for great small-town, Americana-style family photo locations, especially around the old train depot or along historic streets on at Hemming Way Park overlooking the lake.
10. Create Memories — and Capture Them
Summer is more than just a season—it’s a chance to slow down, explore, and make memories with the people who matter most.
As a Henderson-based family photographer, I love helping families not only enjoy these moments but preserve them forever with beautiful, timeless portraits.
If you’re planning summer adventures and want to capture your family’s story—whether it’s portraits at Red Rock, candid shots at the park, or Legacy Portraits for grandparents—I’d love to help.
